A little About The Peach

"The Peach", a 1976 Volkswagen Bus, Westfalia Edition

We purchased The Peach in the late summer of 2006. We had it, and one other picked out of the classified ads, posted on thesamba.com website. We were heading out on a short vacation and to attend a wedding in Whistler, British Columbia. When we came across The Peach in Enderby, upon seeing it, we knew this was the one. Owned by a lovely couple who had taken it on trips to Guatemala annually, and despite not being the original owners, the care and attention given to the bus was obvious. After a little negotiation, we canceled our flight home to Toronto and started the drive east.

The Peach no longer contains any of the original cupboard space or kitchen type of appliances. Instead the fold out bed / rear seat has been widened to make use of the whole interior width of the bus, to give it dimensions that are close to that of a queen bed. A six drawer cabinet with counter top replace the original kitchen appliances and storage space.
Over the years we have resurfaced the pop-top, replaced the tent, replaced the tires, upgraded sway bar & shocks, replaced sealed beam headlights for H4 inserts, replaced the points and condenser with an electronic ignition, and countless little enhancements.
The Peach sports a 2.0 L fuel injected 4 cylinder power plant, that is, as far as we can tell, all original. The compression still comes up close to the factory spec's and rarely gives us any trouble. The paint is not original, but is the original colour.
The body and paint will have to be revisited soon, the paint job was done properly, just not as thorough as we would like to see. There are areas on these vehicles that need special attention when it comes to body work, some of which on The Peach, need attention. Maybe next year.
